A Wednesday - Movie Review

By admin | September 17, 2008

This movie is said to be one of the most acclaimed films this year, A Wednesday!  Is surely an amazing movie with outstanding performance by the wonderful actors and after a long time you must be watching a good story line and it’s for sure a surprises package.

The promos of the movie have might given you a thought and an assumption that this will be just another one of those terrorism flicks and again the weakness of our system will be showcased and our sentiments will be targeted, again same old story concept and stuff, but A Wednesday is certainly not one of those it’s a powerful drama that mirrors society and its virtues in a completely unique and new way, the concept of movie is as such that you will feel that why we haven’t been seeing things this way.

A Wednesday is a tale that features the immense length of an ordinary common man and how he can go ahead and do something unexpected for the solitude and peace of mind.

It’s a neatly woven tail, capturing apprehension, intensity and drama with a strong grasp. The story will hold you straight from the beginning of the movie and it will not let you go until the credits at the end starts rolling.

Believe me after watching the movie, you are going to give it a serious thought to the concept for days, weeks, months or years and the subject will stay glued to your mind.

The story goes somewhat like this:

Police Commissioner, Prakash Rathod (Anupam Kher) is a headstrong police officer, a guy who has a ton of willpower. His job is put to test when he receives a threatening call from a stranger asking for a talk with the decision making authorities, firstly Anupam Kher didn’t trusted this guys words and hence he was been given a warning to find out a bomb in police station next to the Mumbai police headquarters and when police and bomb squad defused the bomb they started believing that this guy must not be kidding and it’s not a crank call… this guy is real serious.  Now this unknown caller calls again and demands release of four deadly terrorists and now police started checking records of all the terrorist groups to catch this guy.

This unknown caller is none other than Naseerudin Shah, who is anonymous to the characters, gives instructions as to what steps must be followed. The caller’s ambiguous identity stumps the police department who begin to realize that they are dealing with a mastermind. He seems to be a terrorist…but is he really a terrorist, well that’s what the movie is all about, you will be sure that yes he must be a terrorist after they capture a hazy image of some terrorist group head, they starts assuming that this must be same guy.

Prakash Rathod at a certain point in the story and after certain events leads him to think that some strange events in a quick succession had started taking places and that had lead to a strange twist. The unknown caller is using TV as a medium to visualize the reactions of the police department somehow similar to how the villain in the movie “speed” use to track.

As I already said the film contains many surprises for the viewers and thankfully they are pleasant ones. This movie turns out to be the dark horse of the year, speeding at breathtaking mileage that evokes a fury of emotions within the audience.

What really shows in this movie is the immense effort that went into this film starting from the director to the lighting crew; everyone made everything a picture-perfect. As one of the writers from Bolly-spice has said that there’s anything that could maybe be improved in the film, it’s the pacing at a few parts. But even this is almost negligible because of the brilliance of the film.

The performances by all the actors in the movie will truly leave you speechless and you will say “wow”.

Nasserudin Shah is a perfectionist and it always shows. He really gets into the skin of the characters that he portrays, making you see the film from a different point of view. In this film, he has given a performance that is perfection in mind, body and soul. Words fail me when asked to describe this performance. Bolly-Spice author also believes that Nasserudin Shah deserves the Best Actor award but naturally it will probably go to much more popular actors.

Jimmy Shergill was also a surprise pack, he was portrayed as an honest and aggressive police officer and believe me he is one of those honest actors who put themselves in the character to get the job done perfectly. Even if his role wasn’t as big as the other two characters, he does what he does best and he certainly have left a mark in the movie.

Truly, it’s your own loss if you miss this one as this is the movie you would love to see whenever you feel something good should happen. Watch it and be enlightened on the many struggles regular human beings face simply as a member of society and you will feel that it’s your own story.

Enjoy the movie and let me know your views :)
