Phoonk - The Movie

By admin | August 22, 2008

Phoonk Story Concept:

Every one once in a while either hear or experience things which cannot have a rational explanation. The truth of the matter is that we have very little knowledge and understanding of life and its various mysteries. Even though we are trying hard to solve all the mysteries their are still portions which are untouched.

The story of Phoonk demands an answer from you to the question that no matter how much of a non-believer you are, can you truly stand by your convictions especially when you or your loved ones are seemingly being threatened by demonic forces whose very existence your rational mind refuses to accept? will you after looking at them can still keep your believe, can you still be rational about things.

Story Idea:

Rajeev, a successful Construction Engineer with a loving wife, and two children aged 10 and 8, is an atheist to the core. He scoffs at God and even more at people who believe’in the dark forces till one day when an evil was let loose in his happy home threatening to destroy his family and shake up the very foundations of his convictions and belief systems.

Phoonk is a movie by Ramgopal Varma, in the banner One More Thought Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. starring Sudeep, Amruta Khanvilkar, Ahsaas Channa and Kenny Desai. This is a story about black magic. The movie is releasing on August 22nd.

Movie Review by Sampurn:

After the action and drama of the movie Contract, Ram Gopal Verma is all set to amuse the viewers with its upcoming movie, Phoonk. As the name might suggest, it is a horror film, which claims to grip the audience.

The story of Phoonk features Sudeep, who is a successful Construction Engineer and a strong atheist. He has a doting wife Amruta Khanvilkar and two children of age 10 and 8. He does not approve of the existence of God and even the black magic powers. However, his very existence and his beliefs are threatened, when an evil power grips his loved ones, the existence of which his rational mind denies to accept. Entwined with this, is another story of a fanatic believer of God, who is forced to become a non believer under traumatic circumstances.

The film is claimed to be quite scary, surpassing the fear of Ram Gopal Verma’s previous horror flick, ‘Bhoot’. The fear factor featured in ‘Phoonk’ is said to seep into the system of the viewer rather than just affecting him visually on the surface level. The horror element in the film is said to have been blended quite well with the emotional component, making the viewer relate to the situations and characters of the film.

So the performances led by Sudeep are top notch, the little girl Raksha deserves special kudos for such subtle and imaginative portrayel of a girl plagued by black magic. Though I find the characterizations sketchy but good enough to drive this sleek, simple but powerful film.

Technically one of the best films of this year, Phoonk is full of long complicated camerawork instead of dead close ups. There are silences and spaced out scenes long enough to let you munch your popcorn. A powerful emotional drama with correct doses of thrill, Phoonk more than a horror film emerges as an emotional film.
